"Journler is provided free of charge and always will be. No matter how often Journler is updated or what additions are made, you will have free access to all of its features for an unlimited time."-- Philip Dow, August 2006
Licensing has changed. In a word, there are now two licenses: the 1) Personal Use license and the 2) Non-Personal Use license.
As an indie developer I'm doing my best to stay true to my original intentions, but it's becoming more and more difficult. The simple fact is, an approach to software development that sustains itself by gift alone is difficult if not impossible to maintain. More often than not, it self-destructs.
Generally speaking, downloads do not lead to donations. If I am to continue developing Journler at the pace I am now, I must be able to support myself on income from programming alone. If I cannot, I have to take another job. This means less work on Journler, which in turn means fewer updates, dissatisfied users and consequently less income from Journler. Eventually, I become so focused on work which pays the bills and buys the food that I am no longer able to continue work on Journler.
That isn't going to happen. I like working on Journler! So in an effort to sustain the conditions under which I am able to continue working on the program, I have modified the license. Journler remains "free of charge" for personal use. By free I mean freely available, by which I mean individuals in a personal capacity continue to have access to all of Journler's features without any of that time trial nonsense. However, donations for personal use are strongly encouraged. If you can't afford it, don't worry about it, but if you can, please contribute.
At the same time, a license is explicitly required for any non-personal use, including but not limited to organizational use, business use, small business use, government use, professional use and academic use. A single license is $24.95. Discounts are available for volume orders.
Donations may be made and licensed purchased at journler.com/donate/,
or email sales@journler.com for more information.
